Motivation:
Our joint observations in the near-slope area of the Arctic Ocean have presented a critically important scientific and political route to developing the understanding of the Arctic that is so important to the global community. In this time of rapid environmental and political changes and global financial crisis there are urgent needs for better coordination of international efforts enhancing international cooperation and fostering of synergy and interdisciplinary dialog.

Goals:

  • Summary of achievements (analysis of state of science, international ties, coordination of logistical efforts etc).
  • Coordination of scientific and publication activities.
  • Strategy of future field experiments (including coordination of plans for ships, manpower, scientific instrumentation and targeted regions).

Time: March 6-7, 2009.

Place: Paris.

Number of participants: 35-40.

Funding: Limited funding is available from NSF grant.

Outcome:

  • Enhanced international partnership.
  • Coordinated strategy of field experiments for several years.
  • A synthesis of the observations results.

Deliverables:

  • A statement from the participants on the significance of the results to date;
  • A statement about the rationale for future activities;
  • Joint publication or summary/review paper.
