ISAC is partnering with NSF-ARCSS Freshwater Integration Study, with Arctic Hydra, and others to organize a synthesis workshop on the Arctic hydrological system in the fall of 2009. This workshop will strengthen international cooperation in efforts to develop pan-Arctic system-level understanding of arctic change. The aims are to take stock of recent advances in our understanding of changes in the Arctic hydrological system; identify key remaining research gaps/unanswered questions; gather insight on where to focus future research efforts and national and international initiatives; and to develop strategies for integration of hydrological research into broader system-science initiatives, including those for responding to rapid environmental change in the Arctic.

Among the topics to be considered at the workshop are:

  • Strategies for observations, process studies and modeling within Long Term Hydrological Observatories, LTHO or Super-sites with nested watersheds of different scales.
  • Strategies for integration of regional climate models, RCMs, glacial and cryospheric models and hydrological models for the Pan-Arctic.
  • Response and critical evaluation of the results of the SAON recommendations as well as suggestions for their implementations.
  • Strategies for dissemination of integrated near-real-time meteo- hydro- and climatological observations and modeling products from the national hydrometerological services and research initiatives within the pan-Arctic.
