IARC Ice Sculpture

iceJanuary 30, 2007

With a grant from the People’s Endowment, sponsored by the UAF Development Office, John Fellerath, Director of the Center for Health and Counseling and the Associate Vice-Chancellor for Student Services, was able to organize the creation of beautiful ice sculptures this year all around campus, including one in front of the IARC building.

The snowflake sculpture was designed by Jamelle Duszynski, the IARC Building Manager. The design is a double snowflake intersecting at right angles to signify IARC research in the Arctic. Encircling the snowflake pattern are circles that are symbolic of a globe and represent the IARC focus on international research.

The carvings were arranged and provided by Ice Alaska. The carvers are from a team of Chinese artists from the ice and snow carving school in Harbin, China. Other ice carving locations on campus include the Geophysical Institute, the UAF Museum, and near the time and temperature sign on Alumni Drive.
