2007 Spring Snow Machine Trip: Yukon River

This map shows the expedition's most recent positions. Click on the markers for more information. Blue markers are locations already visited, yellow markers indicate planned location.

Note: green line does not indicate exact path traveled. The expedition is generally following the river. We hope to update the path with correct GPS coordinates upon their return.

    Ruby Ruby: Arrived in Ruby just before sundown on March 6. No mishaps on the 120 mile leg, but battled a crosswind the whole way.

    Galena: Tohru and Kenji arrived in Galena this afternoon.

    Temperatures are still cold at around -20°F. (Galena High School Location)

    They will leave tomorrow (March 8) for Koyukuk and Nulato.

    drilling ice Kaltag: Kenji and Tohru arrived safely in Kaltag in the afternoon, March 8. They will stay until the 10th and then head toward Shageluk.

    Shageluk Shageluk: Kenji and Tohru arrived safely in Shageluk on March 10th after a 165 mile leg of the journey. They plan to rest and drill tomorrow. On Monday, they will talk to kids at the Innoko River School before heading to their next destination.

    Holy Cross Holy Cross: Kenji and Tohru arrived at 3:30pm March 12. The weather is sunny and feels relatively warm. Tomorrow they will head to Russian Mission.

    Russian Mission School Russian Mission: Kenji and Tohru arrived around 3pm today (March 13) after 6 hours on a rough trail. They put in a monitoring site this afternoon (Russian Mission School).

    To Marshal Marshall: The trail between Russian Mission and Marshal was rough again with lots of sand and ice. Kenji and Tohru will be leaving for Saint Mary March 15 for the conclusion of their expedition.

    St. Mary: Arrived in Saint Mary on the afternoon of March 15. The trail was better but with more branches in the river and little snow, it was hard to navigate and took additional travel time. Kenji and Tohru will stay until Saturday and then plan to return to Fairbanks. On Friday they will speak with teachers and students at Saint Mary Little School and will drill the final permafrost site.
