IPY Environmental Studies in the Boreal Forest Zone

The International Arctic Research Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is organizing a two-week IPY summer school on environmental studies in the boreal forest zone on 14-28 July 2007. This summer school will replace the earlier announced event in Fairbanks (1-14 July 2007). The summer school will be held in Fedorovskoe, Tver’ region, Russia, at the Central Forest Biospheric Reserve (http://www.clgz.ru/index_en.htm). The course will consist of lectures on contemporary climate change, paleoclimatology, hydrology, remote sensing of environment, and climatic, biospheric, and hydrologic modeling. Another focus (and all the field work) of the summer school will be related to studies of the land-atmosphere interactions in the boreal forest zone. Each student will work on a project as a member of a small team together with an instructor and will present a project report at the end of the two-week period. Several field trips in and outside the Forest Reserve are planned to highlight various aspects of studies in this field.

The summer school is open to graduate students and postdoctoral scientists having a demonstrated interest in ecosystem modeling. Advanced undergraduates with experience in ecosystem modeling may also apply.

APPLICATIONS:

Applicants should submit a short CV that includes a list of relevant coursework, a one-page statement of interest, and a letter of recommendation from a research supervisor, via e-mail to: Ms. Kathy Glodowski. E-mail: katcam@iarc.uaf.edu

Applicants will be selected on the basis of their experience with, interest in, and commitment to arctic modeling.
